Roof Claim Answers

Do insurance companies cover metal roofs?

Short answer. Yes. Standard homeowners policies cover metal roofs for the same perils as shingle roofs, including wind, hail and falling trees. The catch is that many policies exclude cosmetic damage on metal, so hail dents may be paid only if they let water in or impair how the roof works.

What adjusters look for on metal

The cosmetic damage question

A cosmetic damage exclusion lets the insurer decline dents that affect appearance only. Without that endorsement, dented panels are often paid as damage, because the roof is no longer in its pre-loss condition. Read your policy's endorsements list before a storm; it is a very different outcome.

Matching and partial replacement

Metal panels come in specific profiles and colors that can be discontinued. If a few damaged panels cannot be matched, the argument for replacing a full slope or the whole roof gets stronger. See partial replacement and matching.

Metal on shingle homes

Many Georgia homes have small metal sections over porches or bay windows. Those count too. Photograph them separately and make sure they appear on the estimate.

Hail size matters

Heavier gauge and standing seam roofs shrug off smaller hail that would mark lighter panels. For thresholds by material, read hail size and roof damage.
