Does a hail damage claim increase your insurance?
How an increase can happen
- Loss of a claims free discount. The most common way a single claim shows up on your bill.
- Surcharges. Some insurers add a surcharge for a period after a paid claim. Practices vary by company.
- Territory rate changes. After a heavy hail season, insurers often raise rates across whole regions. That affects you whether or not you filed.
- Roof terms. A new roof after a hail claim can actually improve your renewal terms, since roof age is a major rating factor.
Georgia's renewal protection
A 2024 bulletin from Georgia's Insurance Commissioner reminded residential property insurers that they cannot refuse to renew a policy because of two or fewer claims in the preceding 36 months, as long as those claims were not caused by the negligent or intentional acts of the insured or people living there. A hail claim is a textbook example of a claim you did not cause. This protects renewal, not the premium amount.
How to weigh it
Compare the claim payment with a realistic estimate of any premium increase over the next few years. A full hail roof replacement worth well over your deductible almost always outweighs a modest discount loss. A claim that barely clears the deductible may not.
