Roof Claim Answers

Does home insurance pay for mold remediation?

Short answer. Home insurance pays for mold remediation when the mold resulted from a covered water event, usually up to a separate mold limit in the policy. It covers the work needed to remove the mold and repair what was damaged, but not remediation of mold from long-term leaks, humidity or neglect.

How the costs are split

Water damage repairs such as drywall, insulation and paint are often paid under regular dwelling coverage. Mold-specific work such as containment, removal, cleaning and testing typically counts against the mold limit. Ask the adjuster which lines fall where, because the split can change what you collect.

Get the scope approved first

  1. Report the claim and the mold before large-scale removal starts.
  2. Get a written remediation protocol and estimate.
  3. Ask the insurer to approve the scope or send its own inspector.
  4. Photograph each stage of the work.

Roof-related mold

If the water came through storm damage to the roof, fix the roof first, or the next rain undoes the remediation. Attic mold from poor ventilation is not covered. See interior water damage coverage and your duty to mitigate.
