Does homeowners insurance cover new gutters?
How gutters show up on a claim estimate
- Remove and replace gutter by the linear foot, usually seamless aluminum.
- Downspouts by the linear foot, often damaged along with the gutters.
- Gutter guards only if you had them before the storm.
- Detach and reset when gutters must come off to replace the drip edge or fascia during a roof replacement, even if the gutters themselves are fine.
Why whole runs get replaced
Seamless gutters are formed in one piece per run, so a dented section cannot be cleanly patched. When hail or a limb damages part of a run, the run is normally replaced end to end. Matching color across an elevation can also come into play.
Hail dents: functional or cosmetic
Adjusters look at whether the dents affect how the gutter works and whether matching dents on downspouts, AC fins and the roof confirm the storm. Some policies exclude purely cosmetic damage to metal, which can include gutters, so check your endorsements.
Upgrades are your choice and your cost
If you want 6 inch gutters instead of 5 inch, larger downspouts or new guards, the insurer pays what replacing your existing system costs and you pay the difference. That is a legitimate upgrade as long as the invoice shows it honestly.
