Roof Claim Answers

Will insurance cover gutter replacement?

Short answer. Insurance will pay to replace gutters when a covered event damaged them beyond reasonable repair, such as hail that dented whole runs or a tree that crushed a section. It pays for gutters like the ones you had, so upgrades such as larger gutters or new gutter guards are on you unless you already had them, and it will not replace gutters that simply wore out.

Repair or replace?

Most homes in North Georgia have seamless aluminum gutters formed on site in one continuous run per wall. A dented section of seamless gutter cannot be patched invisibly, so when damage runs along a wall, replacing that whole run is usually the reasonable repair. Downspouts are often written separately because they dent easily and are cheap to replace.

Depreciation applies here too

Gutters are depreciated like the roof. With replacement cost coverage, the held back depreciation is usually released after the work is completed and invoiced. With actual cash value coverage, the depreciation is not coming back. See ACV versus RCV and how Xactimate estimates are built.

Upgrades

Want 6 inch gutters instead of 5 inch, or guards for the first time? Pay the difference yourself. Do the upgrade in the same project to save a second trip and keep the paperwork clean for your insurer and mortgage company.
