What do you need when filing a homeowners insurance claim for your roof?
The first report sets the tone for the whole claim, so gather a few things before you call or open the insurer's app.
Have this ready
- Policy number from your declarations page, and the names of everyone listed as insured
- Date of loss: the specific storm date, not the day you noticed a stain. See how the date of loss is chosen.
- A short description, such as: hail on the evening of the 3rd dented our gutters and vents, and there is a new water stain in the upstairs bedroom ceiling
- Photos from the ground of missing shingles, dented gutters and downspouts, torn window screens, and any interior stains
- An inspection report from a roofer, if you already have one
- Contact details and the best times for an inspection
What to say and what to skip
Stick to facts you know. Do not guess at the roof's age, speculate that it has probably been leaking a while, or estimate the cost. Offhand comments get written into claim notes and can later support an argument for wear and tear or late reporting. If you do not know an answer, say you will find out and follow up.
After you file
Write down the claim number, the name of the person you spoke with, and the date. You will usually get a confirmation by letter or email, followed by a call to schedule the adjuster. Ask whether your policy has a separate wind and hail deductible, and keep receipts for any emergency work. If you are unsure who to contact first, read whether to call the insurer or a roofer first, and for the full walkthrough see how to file a roof insurance claim.
