Can you claim roof repairs on your home insurance?
The question an insurer asks is not whether the roof needs repair but what caused the damage, and when. Policies cover sudden, accidental physical loss from covered perils and exclude wear, deterioration, and faulty workmanship.
Usually claimable
- Shingles torn off, creased, or lifted by wind
- Hail bruises and fractures across the roof
- A tree or limb that punctured the roof
- Lightning or fire damage
- Interior water damage that resulted from any of the above
Usually not claimable
- Cracked pipe boots and worn flashing
- Granule loss, blistering, and curling from age
- Nail pops and installation errors
- Leaks from clogged gutters or long-term neglect
- Moss, algae, and animal damage, which many policies exclude
Is it worth claiming?
A covered repair is paid at the adjuster's estimate minus your deductible. If the repair costs $800 and your deductible is $1,000, the claim pays nothing and may still be recorded on your history. Before filing, get an inspection: a few missing shingles after a storm sometimes come with hail damage across the whole roof, which changes the math entirely.
When a repair is claimed, the estimate should restore the roof properly, including matching shingles and resealing the surrounding area. If the shingles are too brittle to repair without breaking, that is evidence for a larger repair.
