How do you claim insurance for hail damage?
Short answer. Gather your policy declarations page, the storm date, storm-day photos and a roofer's inspection report, then report the claim to your insurer and get a claim number. After the adjuster inspects, compare the estimate with your roofer's scope, settle any gaps, complete the repairs and send the final invoice to collect the rest of the payment.
Your claim folder
- Declarations page: deductible, coverage limits, endorsements.
- Policy number and mortgage company name and loan number.
- Storm date and time, plus any weather reports for your area.
- Photos: hailstones, dented soft metals, each side of the house, interior damage.
- Roofer's inspection report with slope-by-slope photos and measurements.
- Receipts for tarps, cleanup and emergency repairs.
- Call log: dates, names and what was said.
The steps
- Report through the insurer's app, phone line or your agent, and ask for the claim number and adjuster contact.
- Schedule the inspection when your roofer can attend.
- Request the estimate and photo report in writing.
- Have your roofer compare scopes and submit a supplement for anything missing.
- Endorse the first check; if your mortgage company is on it, follow its loss draft process.
- Sign a contract, get the work done, then send the final invoice and completion photos.
Keeping it moving
Georgia's claim rules generally expect an insurer to acknowledge a claim within 15 days and to accept or deny within set times once it has what it needs. If the claim stalls, follow up in writing, and if it keeps stalling, the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner takes complaints.
