How do you file a recoverable depreciation claim?
Short answer. You file a recoverable depreciation claim by contacting your insurer under your existing claim number once the work is finished and sending the final invoice plus any proof the insurer asks for, such as completion photos. Many policies also require you to tell the insurer you intend to repair or replace within a set time, so give that notice early.
Step by step
- Give notice of intent early. As soon as you sign a contract, tell your adjuster in writing that you are repairing or replacing. Some policies require this within 180 days of the loss.
- Finish the work. Include any supplements so the scope matches what was actually done.
- Get the final invoice. It should show the claim number, your address, the work performed, and the total.
- Submit it. Use the insurer's portal, email, or the adjuster's direct address. Add completion photos and the permit closeout if you have them.
- Confirm receipt. Ask how long review takes and who the check will be payable to.
- Follow up in writing. If more information is requested, respond quickly and keep copies.
Who should send it
You can send it yourself, or authorize your contractor to submit paperwork for you. Authorizing a contractor to send documents is not the same as assigning your claim, and the claim should stay in your name.
If it gets denied or reduced
Ask for the reason in writing. Common reasons are a missed deadline, missing items, or an invoice lower than the estimate. If you disagree, ask for a review, and if the carrier will not respond, contact the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.
