Who is the insurance commissioner of Georgia?
Short answer. As of October 2026, Georgia's Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner is John F. King, who was appointed in 2019 and elected to a full four-year term in 2022. The office is on the November 3, 2026 ballot and the winner takes office in January 2027, so check oci.georgia.gov for the current officeholder after that.
What the Commissioner does
The Commissioner is a statewide elected official who heads the Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. The office licenses insurers, agents, and adjusters, enforces claim handling rules, investigates insurance fraud, takes consumer complaints, and, through the State Fire Marshal, handles fire safety inspections.
Why it matters for a roof claim
- Claim deadlines. The Commissioner's Rule 120-2-52-.03 sets the 15-day acknowledgment and 10-day payment standards for property claims.
- Complaints. Consumer Services forwards your complaint to the insurer and asks for a written response.
- Consumer warnings. The Commissioner issues bulletins, such as the 2023 warning that public adjusters may charge up to 33 percent and must use approved contracts.
- Existing policyholders. In 2023 the office pushed back on a plan to nonrenew existing homeowners over roof age, citing O.C.G.A. 33-24-46.
