Will home insurance cover gutter replacement?
When gutters get replaced, not repaired
- Dents that hold water or bend the profile: a seamless aluminum run cannot be patched cleanly, so the usual fix is replacing the run.
- Torn or twisted sections from wind or a falling limb.
- Split seams and crushed downspouts from impact.
- Pulled hangers and bent outlets when a storm rips a section partway off.
Small dents that do not affect function are sometimes treated as cosmetic, especially if your policy has a cosmetic damage endorsement. Even then, photograph them: dented gutters and downspouts are some of the best proof of hail size for the roof claim.
Matching and how much gets replaced
Seamless gutters are usually priced by the linear foot and by run. If one side of the house is dented and the color or profile is no longer made, ask whether the adjacent runs can be matched. Insurers differ on this, so ask for the reasoning in writing.
Gutters during a roof replacement
When the roof is replaced, the estimate may include detaching and resetting the gutters so the drip edge and new underlayment can be installed correctly. If the gutters were damaged, replacement should appear on the estimate instead. Gutter guards damaged by the storm belong on the claim too.
What is not covered
- Gutters overflowing from clogs.
- Rot in the fascia board behind them.
- Rust, open seams and sagging from age.
Robust Roofing also installs gutters and gutter guards, so gutter damage can be documented with the roof.
