Definition. The third person in an appraisal who settles differences between the two appraisers. In the standard homeowners form, if the appraisers cannot agree on an umpire within 15 days, either side may ask a court to choose one. A decision agreed to by the umpire and one appraiser is binding on the amount of loss.
