Do home warranties cover gutters?
Short answer. Rarely. Most home warranty plans cover systems and appliances such as HVAC, plumbing and water heaters, and they usually exclude gutters, roofs and other exterior parts of the house, or offer only a limited roof leak add-on. Storm damage to gutters is a homeowners insurance matter, not a home warranty one.
Home warranty or homeowners insurance?
- Home warranty: a service contract that repairs or replaces covered systems and appliances that fail from normal use, for a service fee per visit.
- Homeowners insurance: pays for sudden damage from covered perils like hail, wind and falling trees, minus your deductible.
Gutters fall into a gap. They wear out, which insurance excludes, but they are not an appliance or mechanical system, which is what most warranties cover.
What some plans offer
Some plans sell an optional roof leak add-on that covers limited repairs over the occupied living area, often with a dollar cap. Gutters are usually not included even then. Read the contract's exclusions list, where gutters, downspouts and exterior trim commonly appear.
Who pays for what
- Hail dents or wind tearing gutters loose: homeowners insurance.
- Seam leaks, sagging, clogs and rust: you, as maintenance.
- Defects soon after installation: the installer's workmanship warranty.
Practical steps
Keep the installer's warranty with your house records. After a storm, photograph dented gutters and downspouts and include them with the roof claim; the after a hail storm checklist shows what to capture. For upkeep and replacement choices, see gutter sizing, seamless gutters and guards.
