What is the Georgia Department of Insurance website, and what can you do there?
Short answer. The Georgia insurance regulator's website is oci.georgia.gov, run by the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Homeowners use it to submit a complaint about an insurer, agent or claim, look up whether an agent, adjuster, public adjuster or insurance company is licensed in Georgia, and read consumer guides on home insurance.
What is useful on a roof claim
- Submit a complaint. If your insurer is not responding, is slow to pay, or has not explained a denial, the Consumer Services Division can contact the company about your claim.
- License lookup. Confirm that an adjuster, public adjuster or agent holds a Georgia license before you rely on them.
- Company search. Confirm an insurer is licensed to do business in Georgia.
- Consumer guides. Plain language material on homeowners coverage.
What it does not do
- It does not license contractors. Contractor licensing runs through the Georgia Secretary of State's licensing boards, and permits come from your city or county.
- It does not decide disputed facts such as whether hail damaged your roof. For disagreements over the amount of loss, your policy's appraisal clause is the usual route.
Watch for look alike sites
Search results sometimes show lead generation pages with official sounding names. The regulator's site is on a georgia.gov address, and the phone numbers and complaint form listed there are the ones to use.
Before you file anything
Gather your policy number, claim number, letters from the insurer and a short timeline of calls and inspections. See how to file a complaint with the Georgia Insurance Commissioner.
