How long does an insurance inspection take?
Short answer. A roof claim inspection usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour on a simple roof and one to two hours on a large, steep or cut-up roof, longer if interior damage is checked too. Underwriting inspections for a new or renewing policy are typically shorter. The written estimate and decision often follow days to a few weeks later.
What takes the time
- Roof size and pitch. Each slope may need its own test square and photos, and steep roofs need harnesses or a ladder assist crew.
- The exterior walk. Gutters, downspouts, siding, screens, fences and the AC unit are checked for hail and wind marks.
- The interior. Ceiling stains or wet attic insulation add time, and sometimes a separate visit.
- Measurements. Some adjusters measure by hand; others rely on aerial measurement reports, which shortens the visit.
- Your roofer. If your contractor attends, the two may walk the roof together. That adds a few minutes and usually saves weeks of back and forth.
Before and after the visit
After a big hailstorm, the wait for the inspection is often longer than the inspection itself, since adjusters can be booked for days or weeks. Once they inspect, some field adjusters write the estimate on site, but often it goes to a desk reviewer, and the written estimate and first payment arrive later. If an engineer or a reinspection is ordered, add another round.
Making the visit count
Be home, have the claim number, storm date and your photos ready, clear a path to the attic access, and make sure gates are open and pets are inside. See how to prepare for the adjuster and the Georgia roof claim timeline for the full sequence from storm to final payment.
