What are the best tips for meeting a roof insurance claim adjuster?
Short answer. Schedule the inspection when your roofer can attend, have your date of loss, storm photos and claim number ready, and walk the property with the adjuster so every damaged area gets seen. Stay factual and polite, photograph any chalk marks before they fade, and send a short email recap the same day.
Before the day
- Pick a time your roofer can be there, and confirm the appointment by email.
- Have storm day photos, hailstone pictures, and photos of dented vents, gutters, screens and the AC unit ready to show.
- Note any interior stains and when they first appeared.
- Find proof of the roof's age: permit, invoice or warranty registration.
On the day
- Unlock gates, put pets inside, and move cars so a ladder can be set.
- Do not climb on the roof yourself.
- Walk the exterior with the adjuster and point out damage, including easy-to-miss spots like the back slope and far side gutters.
- Answer what you know and say you are not sure when you are not. Do not guess at the roof's age or past repairs.
- Ask how many hits were found per slope and whether the recommendation is repair or replacement.
Right after
- Photograph chalk marks, or have your roofer do it, before rain washes them away.
- Email a recap: who came, what was inspected, what was said, and when the estimate is expected.
- Put a follow-up date on your calendar in case the estimate is late.
