How do you file an insurance claim for roof wind damage?
Short answer. Report it through your insurer's claim line, app or agent, giving the date of the windstorm, a plain description of what you see, such as missing or lifted shingles, and whether water is getting in, then ask for an adjuster inspection. Stick to facts, do not guess about the roof's age or condition, and have your roofer's photos ready.
What to say when you report
- "We had a windstorm on [date] around [time]."
- "I can see missing shingles and a ridge cap out of place on the back of the house."
- "There is (or is not) water coming in. I have covered the opening with a tarp."
- "I would like an adjuster to inspect the roof. My roofer would like to be there."
What not to say
- "The roof is old anyway."
- "It has been leaking for a while."
- "I think the shingles were installed wrong."
- Any guess about damage you have not actually seen.
Speculation goes into the claim notes and can be used to deny or reduce the claim. Describe what you saw and let the inspection establish the rest.
After the call
- Write down the claim number and the representative's name.
- Ask which deductible applies and whether it is a percentage.
- Schedule the inspection for a time your roofer can attend.
- Gather photos of the damage, the fallen shingles, and the yard.
- Keep receipts for tarps and temporary repairs.
At the inspection
Your roofer can point out creased shingles that are hard to see, show which ones cannot be repaired without cracking, and identify the shingle product for matching. Ask for a copy of the adjuster's estimate and photos.
