How do you find your insurance deductible?
Short answer. Look at your policy's declarations page, the summary page sent with each new policy and renewal. It lists the deductible for most losses, often called all other perils, and any separate wind and hail, hurricane or named storm deductible. You can also find it in the insurer's app or website, through your agent, or in the mortgage escrow paperwork.
Where the declarations page is
- In the renewal packet mailed or emailed each year
- In the insurer's online account or app, often under documents or policy details
- From your agent, who can email it the same day
- From your mortgage servicer, which keeps a copy if your insurance is paid from escrow
What the labels mean
- All other perils, or AOP: the deductible for fire, lightning, theft, water and most other causes.
- Windstorm or hail: a separate deductible for wind and hail damage, often shown as a percentage with a dollar amount beside it.
- Hurricane or named storm: applies only when a named storm meets the policy's trigger.
- Section I deductible: the property deductible. Section II, liability, normally has none.
Check the endorsements too
Endorsements listed on the declarations page can add or change deductibles, for example a separate roof deductible or a wind and hail deductible that applies only to the roof. If anything is unclear, ask your agent for the dollar amount that would apply to a hail claim on your roof today.
On an open claim
The adjuster's estimate summary shows the deductible as a line subtracted from the replacement cost, usually labeled less deductible. Compare it with your declarations page to make sure the right deductible was used.
