How does an insurance claim on a metal roof work?
Short answer. A metal roof claim turns on whether the damage is functional or cosmetic. Punctures, split seams, damaged fasteners, and coating cracks that let water in are typically covered, while dents that only change the roof's appearance may be excluded if your policy has a cosmetic damage endorsement.
Check your policy first
Before filing, read your declarations page and endorsements for a cosmetic damage exclusion or roof surfacing endorsement. If you have one, the claim depends on showing damage that affects the roof's ability to keep water out. If you do not, hail dents themselves may be covered as physical damage. See cosmetic damage exclusions.
What adjusters look for on metal
- Punctures and tears from large hail or debris
- Seam damage: standing seams bent or opened, or lap joints separated on exposed fastener panels
- Fastener damage: screws or clips loosened or damaged, especially on exposed fastener roofs
- Coating fractures: paint or finish cracked at the dent, which can lead to corrosion
- Trim and flashing: ridge caps, rake trim, and flashing bent or pulled loose by wind
- Wind uplift: panels lifted or displaced
How to document it
- Close photos of dents with a ruler or coin for scale, plus wider shots showing how widespread they are
- Photos of collateral damage, such as dented gutters, vents, and air conditioner fins, to establish hail size and date
- Any interior leaks or attic water stains after the storm
- The panel profile, gauge, and color, which matter if replacement panels must match
Matching and repair
Metal panels are often replaced by the full run, and older profiles or colors can be hard to match, which can widen the repair depending on policy wording. Hail size and density drive the outcome too; see hail size and roof damage and what adjusters look for.
