How do you get an insurance adjuster for roof damage?
Step by step
- Get an inspection first if you can. A roofer's free inspection tells you whether there is storm damage worth reporting; see whether to call the insurer or a roofer first.
- Report the claim. Use the claims phone line, app or website, or call your agent. Give the date of loss, the type of storm and the damage you see.
- Write down the claim number and any adjuster name and phone number you receive.
- Wait for contact. The insurer assigns a field adjuster, an independent firm, or a desk adjuster who may ask for photos or a video inspection.
- Schedule the inspection for a time your roofer can attend.
What the insurer must do
Georgia's claim handling rules require an insurer to acknowledge a property claim within 15 days of notice and to send any claim forms you need with reasonable instructions. After a widespread storm, the actual inspection can take longer, so follow up in writing if you have not heard back.
If the insurer wants photos instead of a visit
Some carriers settle smaller claims from photos or a video call. That can work for a few missing shingles, but hail bruising is hard to see in phone photos. You can ask for an in-person inspection, and you should if you believe the whole roof is damaged.
If no one calls
Call the claims line, ask for the assigned adjuster's name, and send an email confirming the request. Keep a log. Long unexplained delays are worth raising with a supervisor, and the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner accepts consumer complaints.
