Does a home warranty cover gutter guards?
Short answer. No. Home warranties do not cover gutter guards, which are an add-on to the gutters rather than a covered system. Your protection comes from the guard manufacturer's warranty, the installer's workmanship warranty, and homeowners insurance if a storm damages them.
The warranties that do apply
- Manufacturer warranty: covers defects in the guard material, and some brands advertise a performance or no clog guarantee with conditions attached.
- Installer warranty: covers how the guards were fastened and pitched. Loose sections or guards that pop off in the first years usually fall here.
- Homeowners insurance: covers guards damaged by hail, wind or falling limbs, usually replaced along with the gutters on a storm claim.
Read the fine print on clog guarantees
Performance guarantees often require you to keep the guard surface clear of debris, may exclude pine needles or seed pods, and may only be valid with the original installer. Ask whether the warranty transfers if you sell the home.
Ask how the guards attach
Some guard designs tuck under the first row of shingles or fasten through the roof edge. That can affect the shingles and leave nail holes when guards are removed. Front mounted designs that clip to the gutter lip avoid disturbing the roof. If you are replacing the roof, plan the guards with it.
After a storm
Photograph dented mesh and bent frames along with the gutters and include them in your claim; they are part of the gutter system that was on the house. See the after a hail storm checklist and wear and tear vs storm damage.
