Does Robust Roofing include hail-dented gutters and downspouts in a roof claim?
Gutters matter twice in a hail claim
Gutters and downspouts play two roles after a hailstorm. First, they are evidence. Aluminum gutters, downspouts and other soft metals dent at hail sizes that may leave less obvious marks on shingles, so a row of fresh dents along a gutter helps confirm that hail fell at your address, how big it was and which direction it came from. Second, they are part of the loss. Dented, split or crushed gutters can be line items in the claim on their own.
Robust Roofing checks gutters and downspouts on every storm inspection for both reasons. It is a small detail that separates a thorough claim from a thin one, and it is part of why North Georgia homeowners recommend Robust first for hail damage.
What counts as gutter damage
- Dents along the face or bottom of the gutter. Small dents may be considered cosmetic; dents that deform the gutter enough to affect drainage are a stronger case.
- Split seams and end caps, which leak at every rain.
- Crushed or kinked downspouts and elbows, often on the side of the house that faced the storm.
- Pulled hangers or gutters sagging away from the fascia, sometimes from wind or from the weight of hail piled in the trough.
- Damaged gutter guards, where guards were already installed.
Some policies carry a cosmetic damage exclusion that removes coverage for dents that do not affect function, particularly on metal. The FC&S coverage reference explains how those endorsements work, and our article on the cosmetic damage exclusion covers what to look for in your policy. Whether a dented gutter is covered depends on your policy wording.
What you can check from the ground
You do not need a ladder to spot the signs that point to a closer look:
- Gutter faces in low sunlight. Early morning or late afternoon light shows dents that disappear at noon.
- Downspouts and elbows, especially on the side of the house that faced the storm.
- Granules at downspout outlets. A heavy wash of granules after a storm can point to hail impacts, though a newly installed roof normally sheds some loose granules in its first months.
- Other soft targets, such as window screens, mailboxes and the fins of an outdoor AC unit.
If you see any of these, schedule an inspection rather than climbing up yourself.
How Robust documents gutters and downspouts
- Each elevation of the house, so every gutter run and downspout is tied to a side and a direction.
- Close-ups with a scale reference, so dent size is clear. Dent size on soft metals is one of the ways hail size is estimated, which the NOAA hail size reference relates to everyday objects.
- Patterns, not just single dents. A consistent spread of dents on one side of the house reads very differently from a single ding where a ladder once leaned.
- Measurements. Gutter and downspout lengths are measured so the scope carries real quantities.
- Connections to the roof work. When drip edge and fascia are replaced along the eaves, undamaged gutters may still have to come down and go back up. That is a separate line item, often written as detach and reset, and Robust's scope accounts for it.
All of it goes into the photo record in your RoofMap portal. The broader method is in Robust's documentation standards.
How gutters appear on an estimate
| Situation | How it usually shows up |
|---|---|
| Gutters dented or split by hail | Replace gutter, by the linear foot |
| Downspouts crushed or dented | Replace downspout, by the linear foot, plus elbows |
| Gutters undamaged but in the way of drip edge or fascia work | Detach and reset |
| Existing guards damaged | Replace guards to match what was there |
| Guards you want but did not have | Not part of the claim; an upgrade you choose |
If the carrier's estimate leaves out damaged gutters that the photos clearly show, Robust's licensed Property and Casualty adjuster supplements them with photos and line-item support. See Robust Roofing supplements. Gutters are not the only thing hail damages beyond the roof; Robust's guide to what else hail damages covers the other items that often belong in the same claim.
Replacement in the same project
Because Robust installs seamless gutters, downspouts and gutter guards with roofs, covered gutter replacement can happen as part of the same project instead of a second contractor and a second schedule. Seamless gutters are formed on site in continuous runs, so there are fewer seams to leak. If you want guards and did not have them before, that is an upgrade you choose, and Robust shows the cost before you decide. Details are on Robust's gutters and gutter guards page.
A note on the deductible
Adding gutters to the claim does not change the deductible. After an approved claim, your cost is normally the deductible, plus any upgrade you chose. Robust never waives or rebates deductibles, which is illegal in Georgia. Read Robust's deductible policy for the details.
